Rinjani for Sasak people and Balinese is not only the second highest mountain in Indonesia (3.726m), but also plays very important role in their vital rituals. Hundreds of both Sasak and Balinese pilgrims gathered every year around the crater to sacrifice offering to the lake. Rinjani also function as a famous place to many people to heal some ailments by bathing in the hot spring, which is better known as Aik Kalak.
For tourists and trekkers, Rinjani offers challenging trek and rewards picturesque landscape and nice sunset and sunrise. Many different tropical flora and fauna also part of the unforgettable journey.
Surrounded by over 20 villages, Rinjani is accessible from many directions though Senaru in the north and Sembalun in the east are the main trek starting points. For those who plan to enjoy sunrise from the summit, it is recommended to start from Sembalun as it seems closer in spite of the steep and bald valleys. Starting from Senaru is more chance to enjoy the trek under the shadow of tropical trees up to the point close to the crater rim. Senaru is also more developed than Sembalun because the Rinjani trek Center is set here. It provides information about Rinjani trek, the National Park, eco-tourism, and cultural events around the park.
